SketchPad Privacy Policy

Last updated

Applies to: SketchPad for Android (Google Play Store) and SketchPad for iOS (Apple App Store)

1. Who we are

SketchPad is developed and published by Kanishka Chakraborty, an individual developer based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, operating under the trading name Kaffeine Software. “Kaffeine Software” is a trading name and Google Play publisher name; it is not a separately incorporated company. In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Kanishka Chakraborty.

For privacy law purposes, we are the data controller (GDPR) and data fiduciary (India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023) for the limited processing described below.

Contact: kanishka.developer@gmail.com

2. Scope

This policy covers the SketchPad mobile application on:

  • Android, distributed through Google Play (package com.kanishka_developer.SketchPad); and
  • iOS, distributed through the Apple App Store (bundle identifier tech.kaffeine.SketchPad).

Where the two versions behave differently, this policy says so explicitly. This policy does not cover the kaffeine.tech website, or any third-party app or service you choose to share a drawing with.

3. Summary

  • SketchPad has no accounts, no sign-in, and no servers of ours. We operate no backend that receives your data.
  • SketchPad does not send any personal information to us. If you email us, we receive what you choose to send (see section 4).
  • Your drawings stay on your device unless you choose Save or Share.
  • SketchPad asks for a date of birth. SketchPad itself never sends the exact date anywhere. It is kept on your device, although your device’s own backup may include it (see section 5).
  • Google AdMob serves advertising and Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) manages consent. Google, acting as an independent party, may collect data as described in section 8, may link it to your identity, and may use it to track you across other apps and websites.
  • Purchases are processed by Apple (iOS) or Google Play (Android). We never see payment details.
  • Children and teens receive non-personalised ads, with remarketing disabled, and are not shown full-screen ads. On iOS, children receive Google’s child treatment and teens receive Google’s teen treatment. On Android, SketchPad applies Google’s child treatment to everyone under 18.

4. Information we collect

The app collects nothing for us. SketchPad does not send any information to us. We have no analytics service of our own, no crash-reporting service of our own, no user database, and no server that SketchPad contacts. Apple’s App Store Connect, Google Play Console and Google AdMob give us reports that are mostly aggregate (for example installs, ratings, crashes from users who chose to share diagnostics, and ad impressions and revenue). The stores also show us public reviews and, for Google Play purchases, order records (such as an order number, product, price, date, device model and the buyer’s country, and in some cases city, state or postcode), which we use only for accounting, refunds and support. None of this includes your payment details.

If you contact us. If you email us, we receive your email address, any name shown in your email, your message and anything you attach, such as device details, screenshots or drawings. We use them only to answer you and to keep a record of the conversation, we keep them only for as long as that requires, and we delete them sooner if you ask, unless we must keep them for a legal reason. Our email is provided by Google (Gmail). For users in the EEA and UK, the legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering your message. Please don’t send us your date of birth, payment details, passwords or purchase receipts.

We do not sell, rent, or share personal information, and we do not use personal information for our own advertising or profiling.

The remainder of this policy describes (a) information stored locally on your device and (b) information that Google, Apple, or a destination you choose may collect independently.

5. Information stored locally on your device

The main items written to your device’s private app storage are listed below. None of it is transmitted to us.

WhatWhyWhere
Your exact date of birthTo derive an age band and apply age-appropriate purchase, privacy, consent and advertising rulesPrivate app preferences
Derived age policy (child / teen / adult on iOS; under 18 / adult on Android)To decide advertising treatment, consent flow and purchase gatingMemory, and possibly private app preferences
Advertising consent choicesRecorded and applied by Google’s User Messaging PlatformPrivate app preferences
App settings (for example Shake to Clear, Shake Sensitivity, tool size preferences)To restore your preferencesPrivate app preferences
Remove Ads ownership hintTo decide whether to reserve advertising space on the next launchPrivate app preferences
A one-time marker recording that a store review prompt was attemptedTo ensure a review prompt is attempted at most once per installPrivate app preferences
Your drawingThe live canvas and, if you choose Save or Share, an exported PNGMemory (on Android, recent undo steps are also kept as temporary images in the app’s private cache); exported PNG in device storage
Data stored by Google’s advertising and consent SDKs (for example consent records, identifiers and ad caches)Operation of Google’s SDKs, as described in section 8Private app storage
On Android, a hashed form of the device’s Android ID and a licence flag kept by the app’s advertising integration componentUsed only on the device by that component; SketchPad does not send it to usPrivate app preferences

SketchPad never transmits your exact date of birth. The app does not send it to us, to Google, to Apple, or to any advertiser. SketchPad converts it locally into an age band and passes only that policy outcome to the advertising and purchase components. As part of that outcome, Google’s SDKs tell Google, with consent and ad requests, whether child or teen treatment applies.

Deleting the app removes this local data from your device. On iOS, it also deletes the PNG files saved in SketchPad’s Documents location (see section 6). On Android you can also clear app data through device settings.

Device backups. SketchPad does not make backups. Your device’s own backup service (iCloud or a computer backup on iOS, Google’s backup on Android) may copy SketchPad’s private app data, including the stored date of birth and your settings, and on iOS the PNG files in SketchPad’s Documents location, to your Apple or Google account. It may restore them if you reinstall the app or set up a new device. We cannot see or delete those backups. Apple and Google hold them under their own policies, and you can turn device backup off or delete a backup in your device settings.

6. Your drawings

SketchPad is a local-first drawing app.

  • The canvas exists in your device’s memory (on Android, recent undo steps are also kept in the app’s private cache, as described in section 5). SketchPad does not maintain a project browser, a cloud backup, or any server-side copy. On iOS, each cold launch starts a fresh canvas, so anything you did not export is not retained between launches.
  • Save writes a PNG to your device:
    • iOS — SketchPad’s own Documents location, visible through the Files app. Deleting the SketchPad app deletes this location and the drawings in it, so copy any you want to keep (for example to iCloud Drive or Photos) before deleting the app.
    • Android — the SketchPad folder inside Pictures on your device storage.
  • Share saves a PNG to the same place as Save, which stays on your device, and then opens the operating system’s standard sharing interface. SketchPad passes the file only to the destination you select.

We never receive your drawings, and we cannot recover a drawing you lose. Once you share a file to another app or service, that destination’s own terms and privacy policy govern it.

SketchPad does not require photo-library, camera, microphone, location, or contacts permissions. Save and Share need no storage permission on iOS or on Android 10 and later. The Android app declares Android’s storage permissions: write access is used only on Android 9 and earlier, to put the PNG files you export in your Pictures folder, and read access, which is also declared, is not used to read your photos or files.

7. Purchases (Remove Ads)

SketchPad offers one optional, one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase that removes advertising.

  • iOS — processed by Apple through StoreKit and your Apple Account.
  • Android — processed by Google through Google Play Billing and your Google Account.

We do not receive, collect, store, or have access to your card number, billing address, bank details, store password, or receipt. SketchPad stores only a minimal local indicator of whether the entitlement is currently verified as owned; it stores no transaction identifier, receipt, signed payload, or price.

Apple’s and Google’s handling of purchase data is governed by their own privacy policies. Refunds are handled by the store that processed the purchase, not by us.

8. Advertising

Unless you own Remove Ads and are eligible, SketchPad may display advertising supplied by Google AdMob, with consent managed by Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP).

To check whether consent is needed, Google’s consent component may contact Google when SketchPad starts, for any user, including children, teens and people who own Remove Ads. This sends Google ordinary request data such as your IP address and device information.

Google acts as an independent controller for this processing. We do not receive the data Google collects, and we do not supply Google with your date of birth, your drawing, stroke coordinates, colours, filenames, canvas dimensions, keywords, an account identifier, or a custom user identifier.

8.1 What Google may process

Depending on your region, your consent choices, your age band, your platform, and Google’s then-current practices, Google and its advertising partners may process:

CategoryExamplesPurposes
Device or other identifiersAdvertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, Advertising ID on Android), Google’s publisher first-party identifier (Android only; SketchPad for iOS turns it off), App Set ID, other device identifiersAdvertising, measurement, analytics, fraud prevention
Approximate locationRegion or city derived from IP address — not GPSAdvertising, analytics, fraud prevention
App interactions and advertising dataAd requests, impressions, clicks, in-app interaction with ad unitsAdvertising, measurement, analytics, fraud prevention
DiagnosticsCrash data, performance data, other diagnostic data from Google’s SDKAdvertising, analytics, app functionality, fraud prevention

You should assume that all of the above may be linked to your identity and may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies, in the circumstances described in 8.2 and 8.3. Our App Store privacy label declares this data as linked to you and used for tracking, and our Google Play Data safety section declares it as collected and shared. We take this deliberately cautious position because Google, not us, determines how this data is combined once it leaves your device, and we would rather over-disclose than understate it.

Google’s practices are described at:

8.2 Advertising by age band

Children (0–12) and teens (13–17)Adult (18+)
iOSChildren (0–12) receive Google’s CHILD treatment; teens (13–17) receive Google’s TEEN treatment. Both receive non-personalised ads, with remarketing disabled, and neither receives full-screen ads. Google’s child treatment prevents transmission of Android’s Advertising ID and Apple’s IDFA. Teen treatment does not guarantee the absence of those advertising identifiers. Neither group is shown an App Tracking Transparency prompt. SketchPad applies conservative under-age treatment in Google’s consent SDK for both groups.Personalised advertising is possible subject to consent and to the App Tracking Transparency choice described in 8.3. A full-screen ad may appear after some Save or Share actions.
AndroidSketchPad applies Google’s child-directed treatment to everyone under 18, children and teens alike. Both groups receive non-personalised ads, with remarketing disabled, and neither receives full-screen ads. Google’s child treatment prevents transmission of Android’s Advertising ID. SketchPad applies conservative under-age treatment in Google’s consent SDK for both groups.Personalised advertising is possible subject to consent where required by law. A full-screen ad may appear after some Save or Share actions.

SketchPad caps all advertising at Google’s general-audience maximum content rating for every age band. Google’s publisher first-party identifier is a publisher-scoped identifier, separate from Android’s Advertising ID and Apple’s IDFA. SketchPad for iOS turns this identifier off in app code for every age band. SketchPad for Android does not explicitly enable or disable it in app code, so Google’s supported default behaviour applies, subject to Google Mobile Ads settings, consent choices and age/privacy treatment.

If advertising or consent services are unavailable, drawing, Save and Share continue to work. Where a required consent is unavailable, advertising is withheld rather than shown. SketchPad never sends the exact date of birth to Google. It remains in the app’s private storage on your device (see section 5 about device backups).

8.3 iOS: App Tracking Transparency and the advertising identifier

On iOS, IDFA access is limited to adults and requires Apple’s App Tracking Transparency permission. Adult users may see a short Google-provided explanation followed by Apple’s system App Tracking Transparency prompt. Declining ATT does not prevent otherwise eligible advertising that does not use IDFA.

  • If you allow tracking, Google may use your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA), together with the other categories listed in 8.1, to personalise and measure advertising across other apps and websites, and may combine it with data collected about you elsewhere.
  • If you decline, or if tracking is restricted by your device, nothing about drawing or purchases changes, and Google must serve any eligible ads without the identifier.
  • Child and teen users are excluded from this ATT flow entirely. Neither the explanation nor the system prompt is presented to them.

You can change this choice at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

8.4 Android: Advertising ID

For adults, Android advertising may use the Android Advertising ID where it is available and permitted by applicable consent and privacy choices. You can reset or delete the Advertising ID using the controls available in Android Settings → Google → Ads. These Advertising ID controls do not necessarily disable Google’s publisher first-party identifier or other identifiers. On Android 13 and later, Google’s SDK may also use Android’s Privacy Sandbox ad-services features (such as ad topics and attribution), for which the app declares permissions, subject to your Privacy Sandbox settings, your consent choices and the age treatment described in 8.2.

9. Children and teenagers

We take children’s privacy seriously and design SketchPad to comply with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the EU/UK GDPR (including Article 8), and the Google Play Families Policy.

  • The Android app’s declared Google Play target audience includes children (age groups 5 and under, 6–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, and 18 and over). We have committed to follow the Google Play Families Policy for it.
  • On first launch, SketchPad presents a neutral age screen — it does not encourage any particular answer.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age. There is nothing for a child to submit to us.
  • Children and teens receive non-personalised ads, with remarketing disabled, and are not shown full-screen ads on either platform. The child and teen treatments and their identifier protections are described in section 8.2.
  • SketchPad integrates Google AdMob without separately integrated mediation SDKs. Android uses the classic Google Mobile Ads SDK covered by Google Play’s Families Self-Certified Ads SDK list. SketchPad requests a general-audience maximum ad-content rating on both platforms. AdMob may include demand from Google and its permitted advertising partners.
  • On both platforms, purchase access for users under 18 requires a parental gate (a short challenge meant to be completed by an adult). On iOS, Restore Purchases remains available without it. On Android, Restore Purchases is also behind the gate for users under 18, and the privacy-options controls are not shown to users under 18.

If you are a parent or guardian and have a question or concern about your child’s use of SketchPad, email kanishka.developer@gmail.com. Apart from any emails you send us, which we will delete on request, we hold no data about your child — but we will help you understand and control what is stored on your device and what Google may hold.

Apart from answering emails you send us and handling store order records (section 4), we do not process personal data ourselves. The following applies to the processing Google carries out through the SDKs embedded in SketchPad:

ProcessingLegal basis
Serving non-personalised ads and preventing fraudLegitimate interests, or consent where required by local law
Serving personalised ads and measuring themConsent, collected through Google’s User Messaging Platform
Processing your local age answer to apply legal protectionsCompliance with a legal obligation (COPPA, GDPR Article 8, Play Families Policy) — performed entirely on your device

You may withdraw consent at any time using the Privacy Choices option (shown as Show Privacy Options on Android) in SketchPad Settings, where it is required for your region and age band. Withdrawing consent does not restrict any drawing feature. On Android, adults also see a Reset Consent option in SketchPad Settings; it clears the consent choices stored on your device, so Google’s consent message is shown again where it is required.

11. Retention

  • Local device data is retained until you clear the app’s data or uninstall the app.
  • Exported PNG files remain until you delete them. On Android they are saved to the SketchPad folder in Pictures and are not deleted when you uninstall SketchPad. On iOS they are saved in SketchPad’s own Documents location, and deleting the SketchPad app also deletes them, so copy any you want to keep to another location first. Copies you shared to another app or service stay there until you delete them there.
  • Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to answer you and keep a record of the conversation (section 4). Store order records are kept by Google in Play Console under its own retention rules. Apart from those, we retain nothing, because the app sends us nothing.
  • Google and Apple retain data under their own retention policies, which we do not control.

12. Your rights and choices

Apart from any emails you send us and the store order records described in section 4, we hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing else held by us to access, correct, port, or delete. You can ask us to access, correct or delete your emails at any time. Rights under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act, India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and comparable laws are exercised as follows:

We do not sell personal information and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising on our own behalf. We have no financial incentive programme and we do not discriminate against anyone who exercises a privacy right.

EEA and UK users may also lodge a complaint with their local supervisory authority. Indian users may raise a grievance with us at the address above and, if unresolved, with the Data Protection Board of India.

13. International transfers

SketchPad sends nothing to us. Emails you send us are stored by Google (Gmail), which may process them outside your country under its own safeguards. Google and Apple operate globally and may transfer data internationally under the safeguards described in their own privacy policies.

14. Security

SketchPad stores its local data in the app’s private storage area, protected by the operating system’s app sandbox. Network communication performed by the embedded Google SDKs uses encrypted connections. You remain responsible for the security of your device, its passcode, and any backups you create.

No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

SketchPad contains no links to third-party websites other than links to this policy, our Terms and Conditions, and our support page. Advertisements served by Google may contain links to external sites that we neither control nor endorse.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in the app, the SDKs it embeds, or applicable law. We will change the “Last updated” date above, and for material changes we will describe the change in the app’s store release notes. Continued use of SketchPad after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
